Real ID’s will be required as of May 7, 2025….do you really need one? We’ve all been hearing about Real IDs for years now and it seems like they will actually, finally, go into effect on May 7, 2025. Let’s answer some questions about the Real ID :
What is a Real ID?
A Real ID is an identification compliant with standards set back in 2005 by the Department of Homeland Security. As a result of the 9/11 Commission’s the Federal Government set standards for states to use when driver’s licenses and non-drivers' identification cards.
What do I need a Real ID for?
Real IDs are required for accessing certain federal facilities and entering nuclear power plants. While this might not affect the average person, a Real ID is also required to board any federally regulated commercial aircraft. So that domestic flight to get to your favorite theme park or cruise port…yup you need a Real ID for it.
What if I don’t have a Real ID?
Welcome to the scramble of trying to get an appointment at your local Department of Motor Vehicles. Appointments can be scarce but there are ways around having a Real ID so don’t panic yet.
If you live in Washington, Michigan, Minnesota, New York or Vermont and have an enhanced driver's license (even if it’s missing the star marking) you’re good to go.
If you have a valid passport, you’re good to go (you just have to remember to bring it on your non-inter nation flights).
Alternatively, if you have a valid passport card, you’re also good to go. These cards are typically only used for land border crossings, but as long as you’re flying domestically, they’re acceptable for air travel. Do my kids need a Real ID?
No, children flying still do not need to show identification until they are 18 years old. I hate flying with my kids' passports, but I do always like them have ID on them so I usually travel with their passport cards just in case.
What happens if I don’t get one in time to fly, and I don’t have any other acceptable forms of ID?
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I hope your flights were refundable. The TSA simply will not allow you to pass through the security check point without a real ID. If your trip starts before May 7, 2025, and ends after it, you need to secure appropriate ID before you travel or you’re going to be looking at a very expensive car rental to get home.
